Creatives in particular are renowned for overvaluing, under PRing themselves on social media. Corporates on the other hand still think social media is for kids. But they’re fast catching on. The two need to coexist on social and play the game together.
We get it. If you’re cool, you don’t need to say you’re cool. And besides you’d rather your art just speak for itself. Plus you hate being in photos. You don’t want to be an influencer, you just want to influence naturally right?
This is old-school thinking. And it just doesn’t support business growth in today’s social and digital age.
We know that artists would rather ‘the people’ find them organically – through incognito means, through the power of word-of-mouth. But being legitimately good at what you do is just not enough to make sure you’re being seen, found and shopped.
If you’re not managing your own reputation and building your online real-estate, your minimising business growth. Your limiting acquisition of new audiences, which will future-proof your brand. There’s a lot to choose from out there by way of service providers. And people buy from those that share their story; that they know, like and trust.
We work with artists across mediums…Architects, interior designers and stylists, make-up artists, ceramicists, illustrators and fashion designers. They have not wanting to PR themselves but wanting to secure PR in common.
They’re naturally a pretty cool bunch. They shouldn’t need social media to PR themselves right?. They’re busy creating and just being effortlessly contagious. And hey, no one likes that guy or gal whose all ‘look-at-me’ and over promoting themselves. Totally get that.
Media saying how great you are is a lot more chic than you saying how great you are. But in order to grow and cast your net beyond those that already know you and your business; you’ve gotta just play the game. Snooze and you’ll lose kind-a-thing.
Doing it in a way that’s you at your natural best is exactly what the social pipes need. We want to see more realness. Social media is just people after all. And us humans need more creators, makers and designers sharing their work because it’s great; with the world.
We definitely need less mummy-bloggers hijacking family holidays to Positano in the pursuit of baby-in-beige, being on cue, for two hours, for just the right shot (true story). This really hurts my heart.
We need artists to fill the pipes with nourishment for the eyes. And opportunity is for them to inspire creative action and build authentic community.
Hey artist, you need not overvalue, undervaluing social media as a powerful form of PR and to grow your business. Ok?! Do it for the realness. Do it for those of us that need to be as close to the creative source as possible.
