The stories behind brands have been an obsession of mine not too long after I wore rara skirts and had permed hair. I was ten. Branding, magazines and fashion; fascinated me and had an unstoppable magnetic pull towards them. I was drawn to an industry that at times (a lot) I’ve wrestled with. And this truth remains today. There is much that I loathe about social media, yet a huge part of what we do at raraPR is working in the world of digital marketing, and I love my job.
The art of PR is a true and inherent passion and calling so to speak. Without social media we wouldn’t be able to share what we know as easily with our clients and our community to do good in the world among a myriad of other positive things.
So as much for my own peace of mind as it is for yours, here are the pros of social media.
01
It gives artists, creators, makers, freelancers and businesses of any size the ability to share what they’ve built with the world, anytime, anywhere to increase the visibility of their product and drive demand.
02
It democratises the availability of information. And where would be if we couldn’t Wiki or Youtube the answer to all of life’s important questions?!
03
It democratises influence. The tightly held campaign images of multi-national fashion and beauty brands (or any brand) and secrets of celebrities are no longer as relevant as decades past. The power is with the people.
04
It helps to connect like-minded people with the same interests to build communities and increase connectivity. We know that the opposite of this is also true.
05
It fosters self-expression, which promotes a sense of wellbeing. In a business sense it allows you to personalise your brand and directly connect with your audience.
06
It helps to overcome geographic boundaries. Digitally drop in on your friend living overseas anytime or work from and with people in every corner of the world.
07
It unlocks infinite ideas to nourish the flow of creativity and curiosity.
08
It increases the speed of micro niched news and advertising so we’re more likely and more often able to see what sparks our interest.
Let’s be honest, there’s a lot about the culture of social media that aint so hot. Influencers living in a champagne bubble dishing out envy-inducing imagery can negatively affect well-being. However it pays to remember the good. Social media is far from being all-bad.
